What is shingles?

Shingles (also known as herpes zoster)  is a viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which also causes chickenpox. After recovering from chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in the body and can reactivate later as shingles, characterized by a red, blistered rash typically wrapping around one side of the torso. The rash consists of small blisters that scab over within a week, and most cases resolve within two to four weeks.

As we age, the risk of contracting shingles and its painful rash increases, potentially leading to long-term nerve pain known as post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) after the rash heals. Shingles on the face can also result in blindness or hearing loss. Older adults face a higher risk of developing these complications.

This is why vaccination against shingles is recommended, as it lowers the risk of both the disease and its severe complications.

Protecting Yourself Against Shingles

Vaccination is the only way to protect yourself against Shingles.

Shingrix, a recombinant herpes zoster vaccine, is the only vaccine currently registered with the Health Sciences Authority for the prevention of shingles. Shingrix is available at our NOVI Health clinic.

Shingrix is administered in two doses. The second dose is typically given 2 to 6 months following the initial dose.

Should you get the Shingrix vaccine?

The shingles vaccine was recently included in the Subsidised Vaccine List and the National Adult Immunisation Schedule (NAIS). The vaccine is recommended for:

  • All adults aged 50 and above

  • Immunocompromised individuals aged 18 to 59

  • Individuals who had shingles before

Of course, you would need to inform your doctor if you:

  • Have a known allergy to this vaccine, any of its ingredients (including neomycin), or have had a severe allergic reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) to a previous dose.

  • Are pregnant, planning to conceive, or breastfeeding.

  • Are currently taking any medications.

  • Are unwell or have a fever at the time of vaccination.

Side Effects of Shingrix

Some individuals may feel lightheaded or faint after receiving the vaccine. To prevent this, sit down for at least 15 minutes after the vaccination.

Other common side effects include:

  • Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site. Applying a cold compress can help relieve discomfort.

  • Headache, muscle aches, or fatigue. These usually resolve on their own, but you may take paracetamol if needed.

If any of these side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.

Seek urgent medical help if you experience signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as:

  • Swelling of the face, eyes, lips, or tongue

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Widespread itchy skin rashes

If you develop any of these symptoms, contact a healthcare professional immediately.

Why are vaccinations important?

Vaccinations offer significant individual benefits by boosting the immune system's ability to fight off specific infectious diseases. They reduce the risk of contracting serious illnesses, leading to fewer medical visits and a lower chance of hospitalization.

Staying up-to-date with vaccinations can help you enjoy a greater sense of well-being and freedom to engage in various social activities, knowing that you are protected against contagious diseases.

Not only that, getting vaccinated protects those around you – especially those that can't fight for themselves, like newborns, elderly individuals, and people undergoing medical treatments.
