The Ultimate Price Guide for Health Screening in Singapore

Key Takeaways:

  • There are two types of health screenings: “general”, which captures overall health condition, and “specific”, which checks for specific diseases.

  • The cost of a health screening package generally scales according to the number of tests it includes. The price also depends on where you get the checkup done.

  • Barring the Screen for Life program (where strict qualification criteria apply for subsidized, <S$5 screenings), the cost of full-body checkups in Singapore ranges from S$52.32 to S$510.12.

  • Beyond considering the price of a body checkup, you should also consider your unique health needs, the package’s ease of customizability, and whether it includes a post-check up consultation.

You know it’s important. And yet, like many Singaporeans, citing reasons like “It’s too expensive” and “I’m too busy”, you shelve it away — deciding to deal with it on a (usually unspecified) later date.

What’s ‘it’?

Answer: a body checkup. Now, this article can’t do anything to help with your hectic work schedule. But what it can do is share a list of affordable health screening packages in Singapore to remove the ‘price obstacle’ blocking you from getting the body checkup you deserve.

What determines the price of a body checkup?

There are two key determinants of the price of a body checkup:

  1. Type of health screening: Health screenings can be “general” or “specific”. General health screening aims to capture your overall health condition, while specific health screening checks for specific diseases based on your unique health condition and needs. In general, the more tests a health screening package includes, the more expensive it is.

    • All general health screening packages should at least comprise these four components: medical health assessment, physical examination (blood pressure, BMI, and vision), blood glucose test, and blood cholesterol test

    • Examples of specific health screening tests include an electrocardiogram (to assess heart activity) and a CT lung screen (to scan for signs of lung cancer).

  2. Where you get the body checkup done: Even if you’re screening for the same thing (e.g., the bare minimum of a general health screening package), the price of your body checkup can differ — sometimes wildly — based on whether it’s done at a public hospital, private hospital, or a private clinic. Spoiler alert: surprisingly, public hospitals aren’t necessarily the most budget-friendly option. But more on that later …

For now, those with sharp eyes may have noticed the absence of polyclinics in the list above. Why?

A note on polyclinics

That’s because polyclinics do not offer health screening packages.

Instead, they only provide health screenings for specific diseases like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol. Such tests are only ordered by the doctor upon consultation (i.e., you can’t just show up at a polyclinic and demand a cholesterol test without good reason).

Screen for Life: the most affordable health screening package in Singapore

A maximum of S$5. That’s less than an average hawker meal’s cost these days — and the price you’d pay per screening as a Singaporean citizen under the Health Promotion Board’s Screen for Life program. More specifically:

But there’s a catch. These are for specific diseases only. Which subsidized health screenings you “qualify” for also depends on your age and sex.

Why go for body checkups?

Still hesitant about going for a health screening after learning about the (generally affordable) price of a body checkup in Singapore? Then maybe learning about the following three benefits of health screening could help:

  • Better management of existing health conditions: Regular body checkups help you and your healthcare team promptly identify and track health status changes. This enables appropriate and timely treatment plan updates, improving treatment outcomes and your overall quality of life.

  • Health optimization: “Normal” or “within-range” test results may not necessarily mean you’re as healthy as possible. For example, let’s say your blood glucose levels lean toward the higher end of “normal blood sugar levels”. Wouldn’t that make you want to try to nudge it back down by making certain lifestyle changes and monitoring the effectiveness of those changes (which is made possible with regular body checkups)?

Look beyond a body checkup’s price

Ultimately, for most people, the price of a body checkup will be the primary consideration when choosing between health screening options and packages. But it shouldn’t be the only one.

You should also consider:

  • Your unique health needs: Pick a body checkup package that screens for conditions relevant to your age, gender, lifestyle habits (e.g., if you smoke or indulge quite frequently in alcohol), existing health conditions, and family health history.

  • “Customizability”: More often than not, the “basic” health screening packages will end up too basic, while the premium ones might be, frankly speaking, a bit of an “overkill”. This is why you should look for service providers allowing you to add individual tests based on your needs. They should also be up-front about the costs of those individual tests so you don’t get sticker shock when you’re presented with the final bill.

  • Post-checkup consultation: Believe it or not, not all body checkups include a follow-up doctor’s consultation to help you understand your test results and learn how you could take better control of your health. In some clinics, you’ll receive the health screening reports via email. You’ll need to set up (and pay for) a separate doctor’s consultation to receive an in-depth review of your results.

“Uh, OK, but,” you may be thinking, “Are there even any affordable health screening packages in Singapore that tick all the above boxes?” Good news: there is one.

NOVI Assessment is a fully customizable health screening package that:

  • Customizable health screening so you only screen what’s relevant for you and

  • Provides an in-depth review of your results, paired with practical, clear, holistic post-screening advice from specialist doctors

NOVI Assessment starts from S$299 (prices of all add-on tests are clearly indicated).
