The following tests may be used, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (3):
A1C Test
This test (also called the hemoglobin A1C or HbA1c test) measures your average blood glucose level over the last 2 or 3 months. The test—carried out in a doctor’s office or a lab—uses a blood sample obtained from a finger prick.
Fasting Blood Sugar Test (FBS)
This measures your blood glucose level after an overnight fast. Like the A1C test, it uses a blood sample obtained from a finger prick. However, your healthcare provider may sometimes use a needle to draw blood from a vein in your arm. Avoid eating or drinking (except water) for 8 to 12 hours before the test.
Oral Glucose Tolerance Test
This test measures your blood sugar 2 times: first, after an overnight fast, and second, 1 to 3 hours after you drink a sugary liquid.
Random Blood Sugar Test
As its name suggests, this test measures your blood sugar at a random time. It is also known as casual testing.
Glucose Screening Test
For this test, you will drink a glucose solution on an empty stomach and have your blood sugar checked 1 hour later. If your numbers are high, you will need to take a glucose tolerance test. It is a routine test during pregnancy.

The normal blood sugar level range varies depending on the type of test, the time of detection, and health conditions, such as pregnancy.
The ideal blood sugar level range for people without diabetes is (4, 5, 6):

Do I Have Diabetes if My Blood Sugar Level Is High?

Occasional sugar spikes do not always mean you have diabetes or prediabetes. In prediabetes, you have an elevated blood glucose level but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.
