Eating Out

It can be challenging to make smart choices when eating out.

Set yourself up for success with these tips!

Restaurants

Check out the restaurant’s menu beforehand

Many restaurants post their menus online. Planning ahead enables you to have more control over your food choices.

Choose dishes that are prepared with lower fat cooking methods (e.g. steamed, baked, roasted, sauteed, poached, stir-fried, grilled).

Control your portions

If you are served a larger-than-necessary portion, push the extra amount to the side of your plate and stop when you’ve eaten an appropriate amount. You can ask for the remainder to be packed and have it at another meal.

Ask for sauces and dressings to be served on the side

This allows you to control the amount that you use. Remember that sauces and dressings add extra calories, sugar, and fat.

Choose plain water or unsweetened drinks

Sweetened or alcoholic drinks add extra calories and sugar.

Tips

  • Opt for soupy dishes instead of dry versions and leave at least 1/2 of the soup behind

  • Choose brown rice instead of white or flavored rice and ask for less rice

  • Ask for leaner cuts of meat (e.g. chicken breast) and leave visible fat behind (e.g. chicken skin)

  • Choose steamed, braised, roasted, or stir-fried dishes

  • Ask for less oil, gravy, or sauce

  • Avoid dishes with coconut milk or gravy (e.g. nasi lemak, laksa, lontong) as they are high in fat

  • Ask for more vegetables
